The first Iranian woman playwright will be honored during an event in the Iranian capital city of Tehran next month.
Iranian Farideh Farjam will be celebrated at the closing ceremony of the 2nd Mahmoud Ostad Mohammad Award at City Theater in Tehran on January 7, 2017, for her contribution to Iranian theater.
Seventy-seven year old Farjam was the first woman in Iran who started writing plays as well as short stories, which were published in magazines, in the 1950s. As a university student, she penned her first plays.
Born in Tehran, Farjam lived in France where she studied the French language and literature.
However, she returned to Tehran and started writing stories and plays mostly for children.
In 1970, she returned to France and later moved to the Netherlands. The plays she wrote abroad were performed on stage in Dutch and English. Farjam also made a few movies based on her own scripts, which were later successfully screened in several festivals.
In 2014, she returned to Iran and was warmly welcomed by artists and art fans. A collection of her plays was republished in Iran after over 50 years.
The award ceremony next month, named after the well-known late Iranian playwright and stage director Ostad Mohammad, will recognize the best Iranian playwrights in two categories of original and adapted plays.
